No shortage of clients: Microsoft reaps the rewards of billions of dollars of investment in AI

Microsoft is seeing a significant increase in the use of its Copilot AI technology for Microsoft 365. The software, which is designed to simplify and automate work tasks, is quickly becoming a popular tool among users. According to Jared Spataro, corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft, the number of customers using Copilot for Microsoft 365 grew by more than 60% in the last quarter.

"The number of daily users has more than doubled, which suggests we're on the right track," says Spataro. This shows that Microsoft's investment in AI is starting to pay off, and that users are starting to understand the value these tools bring them.

High expectations, tight decisions

Although Microsoft achieved 19% year-over-year revenue growth in its Intelligent Cloud segment, Wall Street's expectations were not quite met. This led to a drop in the stock price after the earnings were released. While the stock price has since recovered, the company's growth remains behind that of competitors such as Google. This highlights how challenging it is for tech giants to balance between investing in AI and immediate financial results.

Copilot's successes and challenges

A cornerstone of Copilot's success is proving that it can save time on business tasks such as shortening meetings, managing emails faster or generating ideas. Microsoft reports that Lumen employees save four hours of work per week with Copilot, which is expected to result in annual savings of $50 million.

On the other hand, not all customers are happy. Some complain of errors in scheduling or summarizing meetings. For example, one pharmaceutical giant even cancelled an upgrade order because the price didn't match the expected value. However, Spataro points out that according to an internal Microsoft study, companies using Copilot have seen a 50% reduction in email usage.

An AI-filled future

The race to be the leader in generative AI is not just a Microsoft affair. Competing companies like Google and Salesforce are also bringing their own AI tools to market. But Microsoft is working hard to expand its Copilot user base, which will help it solidify its position in the enterprise software market.

As investor interest grows, it will be crucial for Microsoft to continually meet its AI goals to maintain its leadership in this new era of computing.
